Tyson is shown sitting Kirk-like, peering out the spaceship’s windshield. In the new incarnation, the gimmick seems a little hokey, especially when Dr. That’s true in a basic sense: As in the original version, we are placed in a “ship of the imagination” that rockets through space, with Dr. Yet the vehicle he is given doesn’t initially soar the way “Cosmos” 1 did. Tyson is genial and comfortable on camera, just as Sagan was. Tyson for being committed to broadening our horizons.īut, at least from the first episode, “Standing Up in the Milky Way,” it’s hard to see the new program’s having the impact of the original.
Hats off to Fox for putting a serious science program on network television in prime time, and hats off to Dr. It may put up some pretty good viewership numbers, since it is being heavily promoted and shown on multiple outlets, including Fox on Sunday night and the National Geographic Channel on Monday. The original 13-part series, broadcast on PBS in 1980, has been seen by hundreds of millions of people throughout the world and made a profound impression on many of them.ĭon’t expect the new version to make that kind of television history. In “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey,” which begins on Sunday, Neil deGrasse Tyson takes the guide-to-the-universe role filled in the original “Cosmos” by Carl Sagan, a man who was so good at popularizing science that the American Astronomical Society awards an annual public-communication medal in his name. Of course, it shouldn't be one of the main talking points, but they should get it in there somewhere amidst the badass universe stuff. It’s like trying to remake “Citizen Kane.”

Hopefully they come full circle and talk about modern-day religious suppression of science, maybe toward the end of the series. I'm sure the segment will be lost on the people who need to hear it most, but it should absolutely be included in my mind. You don't have to be an atheist to agree. I'm sure most religious people could agree with the sentiment that the inquisition was a shitty part of our history. I don't see the Cosmos segment as "talking down", as much as it is a cautious reminder. While not quite as dramatic as the inquisition, this is a very serious issue, and our tumultuous past needs to remain in the minds of everyone if we are to avoid another dark age. The religious are literally trying (and succeeding) to rewrite science books to include religious language. is currently struggling to keep real biological science in high school science classrooms. While it didn't particularly interest me, I definitely see the need for that.Īs I'm sure you know, the U.S. It seemed a bit dramatic when dealing with the historical clashes between science and religion. So what does everyone think now that you've had time to sort of 'digest' the premiere? Note: This was almost completely copied from the r/Cosmos Post-Episode thread because I'm not sure that there is much else that needs to be said.
There was a multi-subreddit live chat event, including a Q&A thread in r/AskScience (you can still ask questions there if you'd like!) Now, it's time once again to set sail for the stars. It has been idling for more than three decades, and yet it has never been overtaken. The Ship of the Imagination, unfettered by ordinary limits on speed and size, drawn by the music of cosmic harmonies, can take us anywhere in space and time. Other countries will have premieres on different dates, check out this thread for more infoĮpisode 1: "Standing Up In The Milky Way"
